Statistical Observation on Depression of Korean Old Age


Abstract
The author accomplished the survey of the incidence of depression using 1000 male and female subjects ranged in age from 41 to 70 who populaced four author¢¥s selected and culturally sorted areas in Korea:city, town, farm-village and clan-village, and obtained the following results.
1) 31% of the total subjects proved the first degree of depression which is designated in terms of the author¢¥s establised diagnostic criteria and classification and which is to be referred, to as neurotic depression. 6 % of the total subjects proved. the second degree of depression referred as involutional depressive psychoses. Consequently it comes out that the incidence of. depression can be referred to as 1.0% of thq total population of this country.
2) It appeared that the female sex bore higher incidence of depression than the male sex.
3) Age, education, occupation, desire to change the present job ¢¥or position in the family appeared to be very little related to the incidence of depression.
4) Those who worshiped Buddhism appeared to bear higher incidence of depression than those who has no religion.
5) Those who were of little sociality bore higher incidence of depression and those populacing the clanvillage where social binding was most strongly held among the four areas bore the least incidence.
6) Those who had dissatisfaction with their lives bore remarkably high incidence of depression.
7) City dwellers bore higher incidence of depression than town dwellers or farm, villagers.
